The Cambridge First Certificate, the FCE or Lower, is arguably the most important examination in the suite of Cambridge English language examinations as it is the entry-level English language examination that reliably reflects the language competence of the test taker to employers and university admission officers alike. It is a well-established and valid examination that has been taken by literally millions of test takers all over the world. Therefore, if you are looking to taking a well-recognized English examination on which to build your English language competence, then look no further: get started with the FCE and then proceed either to the CAE, the CPE, TOEFL, or IELTS.
The FCE consists of 4 sections:
- Reading & Use of English: 75 minutes
- Writing: 2 essays, 80 minutes
- Listening: 40 minutes
- Speaking: interview, normally with another candidate, lasting approximately 14 minutes
You now have the opportunity to choose whether you want to do the FCE on paper or on a computer – you will have to check to see whether your nearest test centre offers the requisite facilities.
The FCE examination is offered four times a year: in March, May, June, August and December for the paper-based test, and February, April, July, August and November for the computer-based test. The results are generally available about two weeks after the test date. The grades of the FCE are from A to U, a pass generally considered anything between C an A; anything below is considered a fail.
