The International Baccalaureate Programme, or IB for short, has become a globally recognised pre-university/college qualification that students from literally all over the world take in the last two years of high school, in 11th and 12th Grades.
There are numerous subjects that an IB student can choose from though all students are obliged to do Mathematics, English, a Physical Science, a Modern Language, a Humanities and a sixth subject of his or her own choice. Generally, 3 of the above are at a High Level (HL) and the other 3 are at Standard Level (SL), though some very strong students will sit 4 or more subjects at HL. Additionally, students have to submit essays for Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and an Extended essay after the first year of the IB. A student can attain a maximum score of 42, each subject carrying a maximum of 7 points. At this point it is worth positing a caveat: just because a student attained a 42/42 it does not mean that he/she can be compared with another student who attained the same score. Why? Because the former student may have done a particularly difficult and demanding combination of subjects while the latter selected softer, easier subjects. Therefore, we have to be very careful when assessing an overall score – it depends very much on the substance of the IB programme of that particular student.
Universities all over the world recognize the IB as a standard entry requirement for a university/college degree and nearly all university websites will stipulate the exact score that is required as an entry requirement and the specific subjects that a student is expected to have completed. For example, if a student is applying for an Engineering degree then he will definitely be expected to have done HL Mathematics and HL Physics.
