Cambridge Exams

The Cambridge Advanced Examination (CAE), or as many call it “The Advanced”, is a natural progression from the FCE or Lower. As its title implies, it is at a more advanced level and reflects the elevated linguistic competence of the test taker. Consequently, many universities will consider a strong grade, that is between C and A, as sufficient evidence of the test taker’s English language to be admitted to a university while many employers will deem a pass in the CAE proof of an employee’s English language skills set. In short, the CAE is a strong asset for anyone’s CV and a good base to move to either the Cambridge Proficiency Examination, IELTS or TOEFL.

The test comprises four sections:

  • Reading & Use of English – 90 minutes
  • Writing – 2 tasks, 90 minutes
  • Listening – 40 minutes, 30 questions
  • Speaking – interview, normally with another candidate, lasting approximately 15 minutes

You now have the opportunity to choose whether you want to do the CAE on paper or on a computer – you will have to check to see whether your nearest test centre offers the requisite facilities.

The CAE examination is offered four times a year: in March, May, June, August and December for the paper-based test, and February, April, July, August and November for the computer-based test. The results are generally available about two weeks after the test date. The grades of the CAE are from A to U, a pass generally considered anything between C an A; anything below is considered a fail.
