One-on-one tutoring

One-on-one tutoring is one of the oldest forms of education dating back to the very beginning of education itself: it is one of the oldest and most effective forms of learning. From the dawn of humanity the elder member of a family taught a younger one how to complete a task; today highly educated tutors teach their students in their areas of expertise.

For one-on-one tutoring there are two people: a tutor and a student. They can be standing next to each other or be in two very different places. As long as there is one to teach and one to learn there can be a lesson.

Aristotle tutoring AlexanderOne of the most renowned tutors was Aristotle. Aristotle was an ancient Greek philosopher born in Chalkidiki, Greece. Very little is known about his life. At seventeen he joined Plato’s Academy in Athens and remained there until he was thirty-seven. He covered many subjects from physics and biology to ethics, economics and politics. After Plato’s death he was invited by Philip to tutor his son and heir Alexander in Macedonia. Aristotle taught Alexander and encouraged him to conquest Persia. In one famous example, he counseled Alexander to be “a leader to the Greeks and a despot to the barbarians, to look after the former as after friends and relatives, and to deal with the latter as with beasts or plants”. From the little evidence we have from that time it seems that Aristotle was instrumental in Alexander’s intellectual formation and his ideas early on his life.

As Philip realized, there were many benefits of having Aristotle to tutor Alexander. Some of the unique benefits of one-on-one tutoring are:

  • Individualized attention to the student: The tutor focuses only on one student, there are no distractions, just the student and the teacher.
  • Better learning effectiveness: The sessions are built on the student’s needs and abilities. Every student has his own custom made lesson.
  • Easier to learn and stay motivated: Because there are no other students, the objective for the instructor is to keep the student engaged. The lack of distractions and the attention to the student’s needs makes them more engaged.

All of the above bring better academic results. With all the individualized attention, the student is allowed to set the pace and the level of their sessions. Depending on the tutee, the instructor will adjust the sessions and work with them in order to reach their ceiling.

Today tutors do not need to be physically present in the same place as their students as technological progress has made tutoring possible from a remote location. Our platform at AGF Tutoring makes online tutoring very natural and enjoyable. We have great tools that allow the tutors and their students to interact with each other. In addition, we have some very bright and highly qualified experts for every subject we offer, and some very experienced consultants who have been advising students for over 20 years.
